Homemade Dinner Rolls

Thanksgiving is a few days away.  Are you ready?

With menus to plan and tables to set, time to finalize the details before the big day.  If dinner rolls are on your list of items you need, you are in luck with this easy recipe for homemade dinner rolls.

These homemade dinner rolls are fabulous, not just for dinner but for breakfast with some butter or ricotta and a drizzle of honey.  I discovered this recipe on Simply Sensational Food for this month’s Secret Recipe Club.  Simply Sensational Food is a vegetarian site dedicated to simple home cooking.  After searching her recipe box I settled on this recipe and I am so happy I did.  These are great and the perfect dinner roll especially holiday gatherings.

This recipe is simple enough to make anytime you need dinner rolls.  The longest part of the process is the inactive time letting the dough rise.  If you are thinking of making these for Thanksgiving you’ll want to start these a few hours before dinner is ready.  Once they go through two rises, they will need about 20 minutes in a four hundred degree Fahrenheit oven.  I would pop these in the oven when the turkey is resting.

The other option is to freeze the dough.  If you choose to do this once your dough rises the first time you will divide your dough into rolls, place on baking sheet, wrap baking sheet with plastic wrap and freeze overnight.  Remove rolls from baking sheet and wrap rolls in plastic wrap, then place in freezer bags or freezer bins.  When ready to use, thaw rolls and let them rise again for about an hour.  Bake as directed.

Nothing beats homemade and the end result is a fresh dinner roll with crusty on the outside and soft on the inside.

  • 1 cup warm water*
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

  1. In a large bowl combine flour, yeast, sugar and salt and mix well.
  2. Make a well in the center and add water and olive oil.
  3. Stir wet and dry ingredients together with a spoon until mixture becomes to stiff then mix with hands until dough comes together and pulls away from the sides of the bowl.
  4. Gently knead dough on a lightly floured surface until dough is smooth and just a little sticky.
  5. Place dough in a large clean bowl and cover bowl with a kitchen towel or plastic wrap. Set aside in a warm place to let dough rise and double in size, about 1 hour.
  6. Punch down dough and divide into 12 balls. Form into desired shape.
  7. Place rolls on a large baking sheet. Cover baking sheet with kitchen towel and set aside to rise again for 30-45 minutes.
  8. Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
  9. Bake rolls on center rack for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.

Notes

If dough is too stiff when stirring, add more warm water a little at a time until dough forms. If you add to much water and dough becomes to sticky, add more flour.
