Feta and Basil Turkey Burgers

I have to say this is a mighty good burger!

I love a good, juicy burger from time to time.  And nothing beats firing up the outside grill for the first time after a long winter.

The smell of burgers grilling outside reminds me of summer picnics and barbecues and hanging out poolside with a little Jimmy Buffet playing in the background.   Can you tell I am a bit eager for summer to come?

These burgers have become a hit here.  When Mr. Mother Thyme says you have to make these again, I know I created something good especially coming from a man that likes a good burger.

The best part; these are made with ground turkey, but shhh they’ll never know.  These are juicy just like a good burger should be and filled with crumbled feta, freshly chopped basil, along with some other ingredients that make these burgers what they are.

You will see in the ingredients I add in some panko bread crumbs to the mix.  I like to incorporate just a pinch or bread crumbs to help add texture and help keep the mixture together.  Try to use panko bread crumbs and not to substitute for regular bread crumbs.  The panko bread crumbs are more coarse which well in these burgers.

These burgers pair well with the Dijon-Dill Pasta salad I shared earlier this week.

And wait until you see the “burger” I made for you next week!  Stay tuned for that.

What is your favorite summertime burger to grill?

Feta and Basil Turkey Burgers

Makes 5 4oz turkey burgers

Ingredients
1 pound 93/7 ground turkey
1/3 cup crumbled feta
2 tablespoons white onion, chopped
1 tablespoon fresh basil, chopped
1 tablespoon panko bread crumbs
1 1/2 teaspoons worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
5 hamburger buns
Basil pesto mayonnaise for topping* (optional)

Directions
In a large bowl combine all ingredients and mix until all ingredients are combined.  Separate into 5 4oz balls.  Roll each ball and using the palms of your hands press down until 1/2 inch thick.

Cook burgers on grill or stovetop until thoroughly cooked.  Recommended internal temperature should be 165 degrees Fahrenheit.

*For Basil pesto mayonnaise take basil pesto (homemade or store bought) and mix with just a little light or regular mayonnaise for a creamy basil pesto mayonnaise.  Perfect topping for these burgers!

  1. These look fantastic–I just finished reading an article this week the gist of which was if you want to be green before you choose eating local, choose to give up beef. This recipe looks like it could be a great summertime alternative to hamburgers. I just wish my basil were ready to pick now, instead of being the little seeds that I just put in the ground on Sunday 🙁
PS. Thanks for the idea of adding a little mayo to pesto as a condiment–that’s a wonderful tip I know I’ll use a lot!

  2. I love EVERYTHING about this burger except the feta 🙁 No matter how hard I try to like it, I just don’t. *sigh* I love the pesto and turkey combo!! Wonderful!
