On the weekends my family travels to our camp. From Friday to Sunday, we unplug and spend time with the kids at the lake. From hikes to boating and evenings by the campfire, we love spending quality family time together.
The smell of burgers cooking on the grill is almost intoxicating. These tasty Campfire Burgers have become one of our favorites. Mixed with bacon and cheese, these pub style burgers are then topped with sautéed Vidalia onions and a killer Campfire Sauce you will want to pour, dip or dunk on just about anything.

I have topped Campfire Sauce on steaks, used it as dip with French fries, on chicken, you name it. With just a little mayo, BBQ sauce and a few dashes of liquid smoke, you can whip up this deliciously good dipping sauce.

- Prep Time: 20 minutes
- Cook Time: 30 minutes
- Total Time: 50 minutes
- Yield: 4 servings
- 2 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 large Vidalia onion, sliced
- Pinch of salt
- 1/2 teaspoon balsamic vinegar
- 1/4 cup regular mayonnaise
- 1/4 cup barbecue sauce
- 1/8 teaspoon liquid smoke
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 2 slices cooked bacon, crumbled
- 2 teaspoon worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon liquid smoke
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- Pinch of freshly cracked black pepper
- 4 hamburger buns
- Warm olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onions, season with salt and stir to coat with oil. Cook, stirring occasionally until onions are brown and caramelized, about 20 minutes. Stir in balsamic vinegar and cook for another 1-2 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.
- In a small bowl mix mayonnaise, barbecue sauce and liquid smoke until creamy. Refrigerate until ready to use.
- In a large bowl mix ground beef, cheese, bacon, worcestershire, liquid smoke, salt and pepper until combined.
- Form into 4 equal sized patties.
- Preheat grill or skillet with olive oil over medium-high heat.
- Add patties and cook for about 6-7 minutes. Flip, and cook for another 6-7 minutes until cooked thoroughly.
- Assemble burgers on toasted buns topped with caramelized onions and campfire sauce.
I can’t decide what I like better-these burgers or going to camp every weekend!
What could you use in place of Liquid Smoke. I have been looking for a substitution since reading the many article on the internet about how I should be avoiding it. Thanks for your help.
I use Haddon House Liquid Smoke which is an all natural product that gives a nice smoky flavor with only a few drops. A substitute would be Smokehouse Maple Bacon seasoning. It will alter the flavor to the original recipe but it still adds a nice flavor with a touch of smoke. Enjoy!

There is a place where I live that has the best burgers you have ever had. I’m serious I have never had anything from there that wasn’t amazing. And this burger could seriously be on their menu! The only changes I made was I put the bacon on top of the cooked burger instead of in the mix (just bc time) and I added more cheddar by placing a slice on top (bc cheese). This was so great! And the sauce…OMG I was dipping my burger in it for extra!! I will have to be careful with that stuff bc the mayo, but an occasional treat never hurt right.

I’ve got to say that this is now one of my favorite burgers ever! I made slight changes by using shredded Mexican blend cheese instead of Cheddar in the meat mixture; I cooked up more bacon slices to top the burgers with once they were grilled (for only 3 1/2 minutes on each side, adding a slice of cheese on top to melt).
