Rustic Gingerbread Jar DIY
Grab a jar, Mod Podge, parchment paper and some instant coffee to make this cute and easy gingerbread jar!
The fun thing about the jar and method is you could use ANY label for any season. This isn’t the first time you’ve seen me share this idea! I LOVE making these!
Why do I love making these? They are so cute and easy and I love the rustic look. I love the idea of making of bunch of them as a collection to tuck on shelving, in a pie safe, for a really cute and styled look.
While I’ve shared other variations in the past, especially on my YouTube channel, this rustic gingerbread jar is perfect for Christmas. And I am sure this will not be the last variation of this idea you’ll see from me this holiday season. I have some other ideas in the works and plan to share soon, so stay tuned!
In the meantime, let’s chat about this one. It’s darling, isn’t it? And like I mentioned already it’s so easy to make. You may already have the supplies to make this. Just print out the label and you are ready to go!
Supplies
- Jar – I used a quart size mason jar but any size would work you just want one that is smooth which I often find thrifting or at a the Dollar Tree.
- Matte Mod Podge
- Paint Brush
- Unbleached parchment paper – I buy these parchment sheets on Amazon.
- Torn fabric
- Twine to wrap fabric around top
- Instant coffee – I usually use Great Value instant coffee
- Label – Click HERE for this gingerbread label – I just print mine of copy paper.

Instructions
First add a coat of Mod Podge on your jar.
While the jar is still wet, wrap the parchment paper around the jar. Don’t worry if there is extra, you can trim that at the end. I like to roll the jar over the parchment paper. Also don’t worry about wrinkles, that’s what gives it character, plus you’ll be adding the instant coffee on top. For me, the more imperfections the better to give it a rustic look.
Once the parchment paper is covering the jar, trim off the excess. You can flatten the seam down and around the top of the jar with Mod Podge so it’s flat and secure.
Next cut out your label! But wait! Before you cut it out with scissors, what I like to do is tear around the edges for a torn look. I simply use little coffee (just mix water with that instant coffee or extra coffee you have left in your coffee pot) just to get the edges wet the carefully tear around the edges for a rustic, torn look. Don’t you love that?
Now it’s time to attach the label onto the jar. Add some Mod Dodge on the back of the label or on the jar and then place it on the jar.
Here’s the fun part! Now you’re going to go around the jar adding a light coat of Mod Podge then sprinkling it with instant coffee. Sometimes I like to crush it in my fingers to grind it down before I sprinkle it onto the jar.
Go around and sprinkle it around the jar, working in sections then lightly dab Mod Podge on top of the instant coffee then watch the magic happen!
As it dries it gives the jar a cool, rustic look! You can add as much or as little as you’d like and don’t forget to go on the label part too!
I like to use my dryer to dry it but you can air dry it as well.
Once it’s dry, I like to add some torn fabric to the top of the jar with some twine but you can add whatever accents or fabric you like. I’ve made these using fabric, muslin and even cheesecloth.
You can add a tea light inside the jar too for a subtle glow, or fill with potpourri or add a few dabs of essential oil or fragrance oil to a cotton ball and add it inside the jar.
And that’s it. So fun! So easy! And so affordable! But be warned, once you start making these you’ll want to keep making more!
I hope this inspired you to make these too! If you make this too I’d love to see! Snap a picture and tag me or send a picture! I’d love to see how you make and style these in your holiday decor!
