I love a good smoothie.  They are refreshing, creamy and most of the time healthy.  Smoothies are an easy way to start the day.  Just toss the ingredients in your blender, whip it up and you are ready to go.  You can also measure out the ingredients ahead of time, place them in freezer bags or containers and just toss in the blender.  It’s a great time saver.  Here are a few other ideas to get the most out of your daily smoothie.

Don’t let fruit or veggies go to waste — My kids are notorious for eating half of an apple, sneaking just a bite of a strawberry or half of a banana and leaving the rest of it on the counter.  Instead of tossing it in the garbage and letting it go to waste, I’ll cut it up and put it in the freezer to later use in a smoothie.

Add in some flaxseed or chia seed — Another way to get the most out of your smoothies is a few pinches of ground flaxseed or chia seeds.  Almost every smoothie I make I add in one or both.  They both provide nutritional benefits such as fiber, omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants.

Don’t be scared of the green smoothie — If you are scared that you may not like a green smoothie, start small.  Add in just a small amount of spinach or kale to get used to the flavor.  If blended just right, you may not even taste the difference.  Before you know it you’ll be adding more than you ever thought.

Add a scoop of protein powder — A few spoonfuls of protein powder in your morning smoothie is a great way to start the day.

Smoothies are not just for breakfast — If you have kids like me that are picky about their fruits and veggies, make them a smoothie for an after-school snack.  Sneak in some carrots or whatever veggies you have on hand to provide them with their daily serving of fruits and veggies.

Have fun — Experiment, have fun and use what you have on hand to blend up your very own concoction.
