DIY 1776 Tin + Free Printable

Hold on to your coffee canisters before you toss them in the recycle bin! I love using them for easy and affordable seasonal DIYs like what I am sharing with you here!
I turned a large coffee canister into this perfect to add to all your patriotic and Americana decor!
Want to make a smaller version? Grab a smaller coffee canister or can so you can make this too but if you want to make it like this one use a large coffee canister. I’m using a 43.5 oz coffee container.
I simply removed the label then spray painted it with flat black spray paint.
Once the spray paint was dry now I have a container to use for so many affordable crafty projects!
I took this 1776 print that you can get for free below and printed it on coffee stained muslin.

Print On Fabric
I love printing on fabric and it’s so easy too! You’ll just need an inkjet printer and some lightweight fabric.
I used to have a laser jet printer but switched over to an inkjet just so I can print on fabric. The affordable printer I use is HERE.
I like to use muslin. It’s nice and lightweight and prints perfectly. I get mine at Hobby Lobby in the fabric section.
I do like to coffee stain mine which I’ve shared many times before and recently did a little tutorial in my Instagram stories. You can head over to my IG highlights if you want to check it out.
I simply soak my fabric in coffee – just a few minutes is all it takes then I wring it out. I sometimes sprinkle just a little instant coffee on top for even more grunge but that is totally optional.
You can set it aside to dry, hang it outside to dry on a warm sunny day or my preferred method is baking it in the oven. Just please be careful and do at your own risk and discretion. I set my oven to keep warm which is about 170 degrees. Place my cut muslin to fit on baking sheets and bake it, watching it very closely until dry. I check it every few minutes as it does bake and dry rather fast.

I also cut a lot of my pieces of muslin into 5×7 or 7×10 pieces specifically for these projects and do this in bulk so I have it on hand.
To print I tape the muslin onto a piece of copy paper or spray it with some spray adhesive/spray glue and attach it to a piece of copy paper then add it to my printer and print. I don’t use any custom settings, just the normal print setting and just like that I have my image printed on fabric!
If you don’t want to print on fabric you can simply print on copy paper. The printable comes in a plain background so you can print on fabric or whatever paper you’d like. It also doesn’t have a cut line if you want so that doesn’t get in the way.
It also comes in a distressed background – perfect for printing on paper.
If you use fabric you can attach the label to the container with Mod Podge or I prefer using spray adhesive/glue. I just spray the back of my fabric and then attach it to the project. So easy! Just make sure you protect the area you are spraying to avoid it getting all sticky.
If you are using the paper background I do recommend using Mod Podge to attach it to your project. I also like doing the “torn” edge look which I often share on my projects. I simply going around the image and tear the paper with my hands. Of course you can cut it out if you prefer.

Once I had my image attached I distressed it along with the container with some wax. You could also use Distress Oxide in Vintage Photo or whatever you prefer. I often use Behr Antique Wax which you can get HERE.
Next I wrapped the container with a piece of torn homespun and filled the container with dried sweet Annie. You could use whatever florals you’d like. I also added a tag which is part of the free prints that come in 2 designs and 2 sizes plus a blank tag.
I tore the tag and distressed it again using antique wax and hung it on the homespun.
And finally I tucked in a little flameless candle.
That’s it. So cute. So easy. And so affordable!
