DIY Rustic Snowman (made with socks)

Do you have some loose socks that need a home? How about turning them into these adorable snowman? You would never know they were once a pair of socks!
If you want to recreate a similar snowman like mine I used a pair of diabetic socks from Dollar Tree. The fun thing about this project is you could use a variety of socks. You could use some fussy socks to make the hat and sweater, or keep it simple and more primitive like I did.

Coffee Stained Socks
To give my snowman a more primitive look I did coffee stain them simply by dipping them in some coffee and ringing them out well. You could use some leftover coffee or just mix a little instant coffee with water until it’s dissolved to make a coffee mixture to dip the socks in.
It doesn’t take long to soak the socks. I just give them a quick dip in the coffee pool and ring them out really well. I even run them under a little water if it’s too dark. Once I get the desired color I set them aside to dry or toss them in the dryer.

Supplies
Here are the supplies I used to make these cuties.
- 1 pair of white diabetic socks from Dollar Tree
- Small rubber bands – I use the small hair rubber bands from Dollar Tree.
- Coffee Stain – mentioned above.
- Rice – about a cup for each snowman.
- Stuffing – from the craft store or use stuffing from an old pillow.
- Black paint for eyes
- Small paint brush to dot on eyes
- Small sticks for nose and arms
- Buttons for sweater
- Hot glue
- Scissors
- A piece of torn homespun for scarf
- Hang tags – make your own or get the free tags below.
Of course you can customize these however you’d like. You can add small bells, greenery, and even a mouth. I was going to make a mouth using whole cloves but decided I liked these without the mouth. You could even dot a mouth with some more paint.

Free Printable Snowman Tags
I printed mine tags on fabric, or you could print them on paper. There is a page of these tags with a distressed background and a set of blank tags so you could print on your own background paper or even on fabric like I do.

Print on Fabric
I printed may tags on fabric. I love doing this and it’s to easy too! To print I tape the muslin onto a piece of copy paper or spray it with some spray adhesive/spray glue and attach it to a piece of copy paper then add it to my printer and print. I don’t use any custom settings, just the normal print setting and just like that I have my image printed on fabric!

I start by filling about a cup of rice to the bottom of one sock. This will weigh it down so it stands. Then I fill the rest of the sock up with stuffing. I use stuffing from an old pillow or you can buy it at the craft store. I fill it up to the sock line before textured part of the sock. You could make it smaller if you’d like.
I tie it off with a small rubber band then trim off the excess sock portion.
Next I use the other sock in the pair and cut off the toe portion to make a hat for the snowman and fold up the bottom for a “fussy” rim around the hat. I then add the hat on top of the filled sock over the rubber band.

Next I take a rubber band and add it a little above the center of filled body to give the snowman its shape. I cut a few inches of the leftover textured part of the sock to create a cozy sweater for the snowman and place it on the body covering the rubber band. I added a few buttons to the sweater attaching them with hot glue then took a piece of torn homespun and wrapped it around the top of the sweater to make a scarf.
I dot on some eyes with some black paint using the back of a small paint brush.
I grabbed some small, thin sticks from my yard and broke them into pieces and hot glued them onto the snowman to make arms and a small piece for a nose.
I was going to make a mouth using whole cloves but decided it looked cute without it. If you want a mouth you could do that or even paint on a mouth with more black paint.

Finally I took one of the tags I printed on fabric. I used coffee stained muslin. I distressed the tag it a bit then hot glued it onto the snowman. I took another tag and hot glued it to a stick to make a flag for another snowman.
And that’s how I created these. So cute and easy. How fun would this be for a Christmas craft night! I recommend using the diabetic sock as the base/body then have fun with a bunch of different fussy and pattern socks to make the hats and sweaters.
If you make these too I would love to see! Snap a picture and tag me on my Instagram or email me!
I hope this inspired you with some fun Christmas crafting!
