Chocolate Chip Cake with Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Frosting
Love Chocolate Chip Cookies? Then you will love this easy Chocolate Chip Cake topped with a creamy Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Frosting.Â
I have an obsession with chocolate chips. From the classic cookie to other sweet treats with chocolate chips, I’m completely hooked.
I have a Pinterest board full of drool worthy chocolate chip desserts that make me weak in the knees. Just looking at all the goodies pinned makes me want to pour a tall glass of cold milk.
In the midst of all my fall apple and pumpkin desserts I have been baking I wanted to change things up, and what better than a Chocolate Chip Cake topped with a creamy Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Frosting you will want to just lick with a spoon.
I love simple desserts that don’t require a lot of fuss. This Chocolate Chip Cake is one of those desserts. I like to bake cakes, including this in an 8 inch cake pan. An 8 inch cake is the perfect size cake for a weeknight dessert. If I make a bigger cake, that only leaves room for temptation with leftovers. Then I find myself at midnight sitting in the kitchen in the dark, fork in hand digging into the cake. We’ve all been there, right? This is an easy, peasy, I’m in the mood for chocolate chip but don’t want to make cookies kind of cake.Â
The cake taste just like one big chocolate chip cookie, but in cake form. And the frosting. Oh my, the frosting. Let me just say, you may want to double it because you will find yourself eating half of it before you even frost the cake.Â
Go ahead, pour yourself a glass of milk and curl up with a piece of this moist and delicious cake. I promise, you will love it!Â

I love 8″ cakes, they’re perfect for our family to enjoy for a couple nights and then be done. This is a great idea!
Thanks Anna! When I make larger cakes I’m always in trouble with leftovers, lol! 🙂
I have a little bit of an obsession with chocolate chips, too! Unless you call “snacking” on the (multiple) bags through out the baking pantry every time I pass it NOT an obsession…I don’t know what else you’d call it! This sweet treat is divine!
Thanks Gloria! I do the same thing with chocolate chips! 🙂
Cookie dough lovers rejoice!
Indeed! Cookie Dough is probably my biggest weakness.
I’m with you. I love chocolate. And chocolate chip cake sounds absolutely scrumptious! I love simple desserts that you can throw together just in time for after dinner! surprises!
Mmm, this looks absolutely amazing! Would be perfect to have with a cup of coffee or two 🙂
This looks fantastic Jennifer!!
I love your cookie dough frosting, such a fun idea!
I really don’t think it gets any better than this!!
I want this now!
This is delicious! My family of 4 polished it off in less than 2 days. The cake is so good I would eat in plain but I really, really love this frosting! Thanks for the recipe. I, too, love an 8×8 cake!
Hi Susan! I am so glad to hear you enjoyed this yummy cake! If you liked this cake, you should try the Cinnamon Roll Cake that I just featured as well. It is also made in an 8×8. Thanks so much for letting me know.
Hi Jen!
I have trouble finding pudding mix in our grocery here. What can I substitute it for? Thanks!
You can just leave it out of the recipe if you can’t find it. Enjoy!
Just made this for company tonight, and WOW! Sooooo delicious.
Hi Janet! So glad you enjoy this yummy recipe! Enjoy your evening!
Would it be okay to leave out the sour cream? Where I live, there is no sour cream (or if I wanted to make my own, there’s no buttermilk either).
Hi Erin. You can omit the sour cream or substitute plain Greek yogurt in place of the sour cream. Enjoy!
Do you think this frosting would be good on chocolate cupcakes? And is there any specific storing instructions? If I make it at night for the next day, should I refrigerate?
Hi Whitney, you could definitely use this frosting on cupcakes. It can be stored in a cake carrier at room temperature or in the refrigerator.
I am making myself this for Mother’s Day!
I came across this recipe on Pinterest and made it for myself for my birthday. I thought I had everything on hand but when I went to make it I realized I only had chocolate pudding, not vanilla. I went ahead and subbed it, and this dessert was DIVINE! I would like to try it again with the vanilla pudding, but in case anyone was wondering, it’s fabulous with chocolate as well! Love, love, love the frosting, too. Thanks for a great recipe!
